“The staff is very unfriendly and rude, I'm not sure if it's just this location or they only like catering for a certain ethnicity of people. There are grocery stores in the area, I would avoid this one given how mean their staff is honestly”

“The parking spaces in their parking lot are really small, even for compact cars. The genius responsible for that thought that more parking spaces equals more money but failed to realize that people end up taking two spaces or blocking their neighbors in. The same number of cars end up parking in their lot as if the spaces were bigger, but with more bad vibes, door dings and discrimination against people with midsize cars. Really, really, dumb.”

How we read it

What we read, how it was sorted, and what it cannot tell you

What was asked. “traderjoes.com”: we read it as Trader Joe's (grocery store). The rivals were picked for this sample.

The reviews. Per place, Google's own rating, count and star split from a Google Maps search, and its newest reviews, up to 100 from the last 180 days, in the language each was written. 6 of the 14 Trader Joe's locations Google Maps listed for Chicago, IL were read, the ones inside the city of Chicago; not read: Trader Joe's, 1426 E Golf Rd; Trader Joe's, 14924 LaGrange Rd; Trader Joe's, 1211 Chicago Ave and others; each rival place is the nearest of that chain to a location, within 8 km. Owner replies (the owner's response Google returns with each review) to the 1-3★ and the 4-5★ reviews read: Trader Joe's 0 of 38 and 0 of 412; Whole Foods Market 31 of 90 and 210 of 309; Mariano's 0 of 131 and 0 of 328; ALDI 0 of 42 and 0 of 89. Reviewer names and owners' replies are not kept, only whether a reply exists.

Dates. Trader Joe's on Google Maps 8 May 2026 to 4 Nov 2026; Whole Foods Market on Google Maps 8 May 2026 to 4 Nov 2026; Mariano's on Google Maps 8 May 2026 to 4 Nov 2026; ALDI on Google Maps 9 May 2026 to 1 Nov 2026; read November 4, 2026.

The themes. A model (Gemini) named one set of themes from a sample of the reviews, added themes for reviews it left out, then read each of the 765 reviews and marked the themes it says, up to three; a second pass reread each against its theme and kept only those that say it. 512 of the 765 reviews are in a theme. The counts are exact tallies of that sorting; the sorting is a reading, not a measurement.

The quotes. Every quote is one review, stored as written and shown whole. No reviewer names. Reviews that name an account, carry a link, or name or describe a private person are counted but never quoted (61 left out for naming a person).

What it cannot tell you. Google reviews come from people who chose to write one; 47% of those we read give stars and no words, so themes rest on the ones with words. Google removes some reviews and can't show visits. A share is of the reviews with words we read, not of customers.

The evidence. The HTML version of this report lists every review we read, by theme, with a link to the place on Google Maps.

They carry wide range of unique items that are hard to find at other stores. Their seasonal items like mango or pumpkin are great and tasty. Their seasonal dark chocolates are great and a great price which can applied to their wines and beer, produces, cheese ,sauces. Their frozen selection are good and reasonably priced and delicious. Staff are great and friendly , helpful and knowledgeable. Parking sometimes can get tricky.

1132026-08-30Trader Joe's · Google Maps · 5★There's not a lot to distinguish one TJ's from another, except perhaps square footage and parking. Free parking here is nice, especially since Lincoln Ave has become metered parking in the block directly in front of the store sometime during 2026. However, free street parking is not difficult on any of the other nearby streets. This store is always clean. I often park my car on the street, then stop in here before walking to Wrigley Field. Sometimes I buy a wrap or salad for lunch or dinner and they're generally good.and always a good value. Staff is friendly and accommodating.

While waiting ~10 minutes at the deli without anyone behind the counter, I saw at least five other employees pass by without asking if they could help. Ultimately, one pointed across the floor at another employee who yelled back that she was on break. No one lifted a finger to help. Ultimately, I spoke with the store manager who also simply explained that the employee was on break. The store is so busy I e had to wait over 10 minutes for it in the past. Cashiers are working tirelessly to clean up corporate's mess, but the bottlenecks are not their fault. 7342026-08-06ALDI · Google Maps · 1★I used to come to this Aldi on a weekly basis. They had 8 self check out lanes back then, almost all of which would be occupied. They have since removed all self check out and only have cashiers. The issue is that they usually only have 1 to 2 cashiers working at any given time. I went in to buy only two items, but there was a line of 10+ people, many of which had full carts. I refuse to wait 20+ minutes in line at a grocery store. I will no longer be coming back to this location and will be using other stores with self checkout available.

1192026-08-06Trader Joe's · Google Maps · 2★The parking spaces in their parking lot are really small, even for compact cars. Really, really, dumb.

4882026-08-24Mariano's · Google Maps · 1★Horrible parking lot, gate does not go up right away so you waste minutes with a rude operator and then you might not receive your complimentary parking.... grocery store has poor signage and its hard to navigate and find Salad bar is in the middle of all the plastic containers,, no napkins nearby, smart food in buffet daily.
4962026-07-22Mariano's · Google Maps · 4★Great supermarket, but be forewarned: The garage uses the unreliable Metropolis payment system, so you might get an outrageously inflated bill after you've done everything correctly. Is a great supermarket really worth the time it takes to dispute an incorrect $50 penalty? I'm not so sure.
6962026-07-11ALDI · Google Maps · 1★The parking through Metropolis is a complete SCAM operation that relies on people not jumping through the hoops their system requires - and even when you follow the instructions perfectly, they still charge your card. I thought Aldi was an upstanding company, but no upstanding company would do business with a parking scam operation like this. It’s disgusting. On top of that, this location is always out of inventory. I absolutely will not be visiting this Aldi again for these reasons.

6982026-07-06ALDI · Google Maps · 1★This review is for the parking lot that this Aldi uses, Metropolis. Even if you put in the code that Aldi provides for the free parking, Metropolis will still charge you for the parking and on top of that will charge you fees for not making the payment. I reached out to Metropolis and they said they had reviewed everything and had fixed it, a few weeks later I got a notice in the mail saying I owed a ton of fees. Don't park in the Aldi garage
7032026-06-15ALDI · Google Maps · 1★I don't care for Aldi in general, but their 90 min free parking lot situation makes you jump through hoops just to get out. I did not have a good experience with the metropolis parking app.

There is a hidden charge by metropolis that was not clearly stated or posted in the garage and they will slap you with a fat bill. I noticed other people went through the same thing. It may look closed when the auto door is down, but drive up and it will pop open for you. You just need to ask for validation at register if you park downstairs.

I looked down on the floor next to me and the liquid was yellow. I went to the restrooms to go clean it off and of course, the restrooms are locked and you need a code to get in (located on your receipt after you make a purchase). I got some paper towels from the customer dining area, wiped my head, and it's the same yellow stuff that was on the floor and it has both the color and consistency of urine. Absolutely disgusting.

It was a dull simple flavored fruit cake I could have gotten from Walmart. I regretted spending the money and felt foolish, embarrassed having taken it to the party. 6902026-08-01ALDI · Google Maps · 3★It was fine. Not outstanding. Nothing special. My usual Aldis I go to have the same products if not more. Didn't experience great customer service like people talk about on these reviews. It was large and mostly clean with the exception of the produce section that was littered with smashed grapes. Overall....it was fine. I will probably continue frequenting my other Aldi.

6972026-07-07ALDI · Google Maps · 5★This is a very good sized Aldi. I walked here, so I can’t comment on parking,, except to say that there’s a QR code at the register for parking for an amount of free time. I saw no issues with stock at this location. I enjoyed my shopping experience here.

7232026-05-30ALDI · Google Maps · 2★This is overall a good store but when it comes to curbside pickup no one is ever available. They always cancel it no matter what time you put it in for
7272026-10-28ALDI · Google Maps · 1★Smaller than a normal size, so they have fewer items. The Aldi Finds section is tiny and usually a mess of half ripped boxes and stuff thrown all over the place. Long lines at the checkout round off your shopping experience. One of the worst Aldi's I've seen.
