How we read it

What we read, how it was sorted, and what it cannot tell you

What was asked. “shakeshack.com”: we read it as Shake Shack (hamburger restaurant). No rivals were named, so we picked 3 chains near its locations: Five Guys (fast-casual burger chain with multiple Chicago locations); Epic Burger (local Chicago fast-casual burger chain with several locations); Small Cheval (local fast-casual burger chain across Chicago neighborhoods).

The reviews. Per place, Google's own rating, count and star split from a Google Maps search, and its newest reviews, up to 100 from the last 180 days, in the language each was written. 9 of the 9 Shake Shack locations Google Maps listed for Chicago, IL were read, the ones with the most Google reviews when this report was first run; each rival place is the nearest of that chain to a location, within 8 km. Owner replies to the 1-3★ and the 4-5★ reviews read: Shake Shack 193 of 198 and 2 of 406; Five Guys 54 of 56 and 177 of 179; Epic Burger 31 of 32 and 219 of 219; Small Cheval 61 of 106 and 11 of 237. Reviewer names and owners' replies are not kept, only whether a reply exists.

Dates. Shake Shack on Google Maps 6 May 2026 to 2 Nov 2026; Five Guys on Google Maps 12 May 2026 to 1 Nov 2026; Epic Burger on Google Maps 7 May 2026 to 26 Oct 2026; Small Cheval on Google Maps 7 May 2026 to 2 Nov 2026; read November 2, 2026.

The themes. A model (Gemini) named one set of themes from a sample of the reviews, added themes for reviews it left out, then read each of the 902 reviews and marked the themes it says, up to three; a second pass reread each against its theme and kept only those that say it. 665 of the 902 reviews are in a theme (1 corrected by hand, each with its reason in the HTML list). The counts are exact tallies of that sorting; the sorting is a reading, not a measurement.

The quotes. Every quote is one review, stored as written and shown whole. No reviewer names. Reviews that name an account, carry a link, or name or describe a private person are counted but never quoted (87 left out for naming a person). 1 review with only emoji in the body left out. 1 reviews read twice counted once.

What it cannot tell you. Google reviews come from people who chose to write one; 37% of those we read give stars and no words, so themes rest on the ones with words. Google removes some reviews and can't show visits. A share is of the reviews with words we read, not of customers.

The evidence. The HTML version of this report lists every review we read, by theme, with a link to the place on Google Maps.

Si no, mesa alta.

The last time unfortunately I encountered a regional manager sprawled out eating her salad 🥗 from home telling off staff. That made the atmosphere really bleak. Their veggie burger was delicious! Packed with flavor and not dry. I will definitely purchase that again. Their chicken bites were yummy! I really enjoyed them. Their Biscoff and Oreo shakes were very good. But the star of the show...the fries. They had grilled onions, their signature sauce and cheese on them. Sooooooo freaking good! Their mac and cheese wasn't bad either. Also customer service was exceptional! Can't wait to come back!

6812026-10-24Small Cheval · Google Maps · 4★Good spot for a quick and filling lunch. Burgers were solid, well cooked and very cheesy, though slightly greasy (which comes with the double cheeseburger territory). Fries were well cooked with a nice crisp on the outside, but desperately needed more salt. Prices are good, with a burger at 11 dollars, but adding fries and a drink brings it to 20 which is a bit much. Overall; good spot that I would definitely go to again, with quality food and solid prices. Worth a stop if you are in the area.

162026-08-27Shake Shack · Google Maps · 1★I paid 22 dollars for a drink. Cheese fries and a grilled cheese sandwich. The sandwich was a small round sandwich with a small amount of cheese on it. The cheese fries were fries thrown into a box on top of the cheese. This made for a lump of fries I could not separate to enjoy. Extremely disappointing. The manager did not help me. She told me to go to the company website and register a complaint which I did.

7642026-07-31Small Cheval · Google Maps · 3★Very aesthetic and Instagram worthy location. Small Cheval offers a simple menu with big tastes. One of my favorite burgers in the city with garlic aioli on tap for dipping your fries. I was disappointed to see they got rid of their fountain drink machine, which is the only reason I gave it a lower rating. You have to pay to have even water now, and once I’m out of drink, I tend to not finish the rest of my meal.

8722026-07-30Small Cheval · Google Maps · 1★This places looks cool and has a nice atmosphere. The employees are nice but uninformed. The plant burger is cooked on the grill with all the meat burgers and comes with mayo by default. The bun is made with egg and dairy. The fries are fried in beef tallow. Nothing is labeled so you have to ask about each specific component of your food. In a nutshell, none of the options here are vegan, or even vegetarian for that matter, because of cross contamination.

8842026-06-23Small Cheval · Google Maps · 4★Fun place with outdoor seating. A decent burger and fries, although the bun was too much bread for the burger - easily solved cutting it in half and just doubling the burger on one of the halves. Pet friendly - there were several on the patio where we ate.
8922026-05-29Small Cheval · Google Maps · 5★The hype is real. Au Cheval on Armitage delivers. I love that they respected the history of The Freeze while giving the space new life. The soft serve and milkshakes are fantastic, the food is excellent, and the outdoor dining area is one of the best spots to spend a beautiful Chicago afternoon. Thoughtful, nostalgic, and incredibly well executed. We'll definitely be back.

3092026-10-02Shake Shack · Google Maps · 3★Very "mid" for the price. I got a burger just to try it. Wants to be like In and Out Burger but it misses on every mark. The meat is not seasoned. Their sauce is bland. The buns are meh. The lettuce has no flavor. All that nonsense and every burger starts at $12. They have self serve kiosks that suck too. They text you that your order is ready and still make you wait 5 minutes once its ready. First and only time. Never coming back becuase there is nothing to come back to.

The burger was cooked to crispy grizzle and the fries were dry and tasteless like hotel room service fries. I waited at least 20 minutes for my order and noticed 3 bags just sitting on the back counter for 10 minutes. I’m only complaining because every five guys Ive been to has the best fries. 7322026-05-12Small Cheval · Google Maps · 2★So disappointed to say this place has dropped in quality. The burgers used to have so much flavor with each bite that the lack of toppings was a good thing. Now the burgers taste like run of the mill frozen patties from Walmart. I feel like a McDonald’s quarter pounder now has more flavor and it hurts to write this review because of the fond memories I have eating here with friends.

8712026-08-01Small Cheval · Google Maps · 1★If you’re a vegetarian, run from the veggie burger. It is the least loved item on the menu, an afterthought dressed up as a dish. Picture wet, undercooked sludge: the texture of canned cat food, the dignity of none. It tastes like pea protein drowned in liquid smoke, oil, and whatever chemicals were closest on the shelf. Order it if you want a film on your tongue that outlasts the meal itself, a greasy ghost that lingers for hours. I have to wonder: has anyone who works there actually eaten one

8232026-07-30Small Cheval · Google Maps · 3★Hate to say Small Cheval is not what it once was. I have to agree with a lot of the negative reviews about this location: Fries were dry and cold, burger lacked flavor and was also dry and lifeless 🥲 I decided to try a shake to see if we could leave on a high note, but it was incredibly mediocre and lacked any flavor - a waste of calories & way overpriced for what it was. Service was a bit strange based on other times visiting other Shake Shack’s there was an employee standing at the register asking people to please use the kiosk instead of her taking the order… she was already at the register so I don’t understand…

3172026-09-18Shake Shack · Google Maps · 1★Let me start by saying I typically enjoy shake shack. It has been a pleasant place to eat when I’m in the mood for a burger and fries. But I am very disappointed to change the nuggets from fresh to frozen nuggets!! I looked forward to their nuggets as a reliable replacement for Chick-fil-A nuggets. Not any more. Their frozen nuggets are worse than Tyson nuggets. Please review this at a company level and change back!

7382026-08-17Small Cheval · Google Maps · 3★The dining space is good, but the burger and fries aren't up to the level that made Au/Small Cheval a local staple. 7752026-06-19Small Cheval · Google Maps · 1★For some reason my cheeseburger came out without lettuce, tomato, or sauce. In retrospect, this is mentioned on the menu, but it's an unreasonable default configuration for a burger. Secondly, they removed the chicken burger. 8132026-08-28Small Cheval · Google Maps · 1★This place has the absolute WORST customer service. Whatever you do, do not place an order on their website for delivery. The restaurant will deliberately change the order for you to pick up and if you try calling the restaurant, you'll NEVER reach a person.
8172026-08-14Small Cheval · Google Maps · 2★So I place my order at the cashier and pick up my food from there and I was asked to pay 18% MINIMUM tip? Are you serious?
