What we read, how it was sorted, and what it cannot tell you

What the box said. “hoka.com”: a brand. We found HOKA at hoka.com, and its accounts Instagram @hoka, TikTok @hoka.

Reddit. 22 threads and 416 comments from 10 subreddits, found by searching Reddit for “HOKA”, “Hoka shoes” over the last 12 months (Reddit's relevance order; up to 30 threads, up to 20 top comments each).

Under the brand's posts. 389 public comments under the newest posts of Instagram @hoka (30 posts), TikTok @hoka (25 posts), capped at 400 comments; the brand's own replies left out.

Amazon. 70 reviews of 4 products found by searching Amazon for “HOKA” (only the brand's own listings): per product up to 10 most helpful reviews, then up to 10 most helpful critical ones (1-3 stars; slide 3 gives each product's count read). The critical pass is there so complaints show; it is not the share of buyers who complain (Amazon's own star split is on slide 3).

The themes. The durability isn’t great, each pair lasts me about a year, but it’s so worth it. I used to only be able to walk ~10k steps a day, even with inserts to help cushion my feet and my feet would kill me. Now I can do ~30-40k a day (when I travel) and my feet hurt less than when I was using the generic Ross shoes. Been using Hokas for 3 years now, and see myself using it for a long time in the future!
1692026-07-20Reddit · r/HokaI was diagnosed with a bruised heel fat pad, a spur and plantar fasciitis and my physio recommended the bondi 9s to me, they’ve been great and the cushioning has been really helpful in my recovery. However, my physio did also assess my pronation and arches and said I looked ok (the plantar fasciitis was a result of the bruised pad/injury) so it may be that you need much more arch support than the bondi 9s can offer?

The sole is quite thick, but they are surprisingly light still. They fit well with a little breaking in, my heel slides a little at first until getting them tightened right and worn in after a couple of weeks. They are breathable so my feet don't get hot and at first it takes a little getting used to for how they are soft when you step but then have a little spring to them. Great shoes for a lot of walking around or standing on concrete floors all day. No more leg soreness since I started wearing them.

When I noticed the inner-side damage, I searched online and saw multiple people reporting the same issue. Honestly, I regret not researching more thoroughly before purchasing. Your best bet is to go to a running store or some other type of shoe store that does fittings and have the recommend you options. Chat GPT doesn’t know s***, it’s a glorified search engine. I went back to Brooks Beast stability shoes with green Superfeet insoles. They are a bit more tiring on hard city surfaces initially, but one gets used to it after the feet strengthen. And overall the max stability shoes behave more like light hikers, then the max marshmallow cushion Hoka. I still recommend people try different expensive functional running shoes or light hikers, rotate them and see what works best.

Hokas tend to be better for wide feet for example. Asics are known to be better for low arches and the OnClouds are sleek and lightweight. I've only benefited from lower heeled footwear until my plantar was strengthened pain gone from the foot roller and calf massages. Now I can wear whatever. All these just seem to bandaid the pain. A shoe is not going to get rid of the plantar fasciitis issue.

I think they are too fat of a sole for the foam used in the midsole and it doesn’t flex when coming off the toe meaning you slide in the heel a lot more. After weeks & weeks of trying to decide which trail shoes to buy I settled on speedgoat 6. They were unbelievable. I did 75km in brutal conditions up the mountains of the lake district in 6 hours of torrential rain. I finished with my feet in perfect condition. No blisters, no lost toenail, no bruising. I have bought this size in Dicks Sporting and REI also I had my feet measured professionally my size is 8.5 wide but I have bought this shoe in a size 9 and they fit from other stores. Disappointed that I had to spend money to have UPS to make shipping labels. Both of these are size 9B. They feel good but the black that I really needed are to short!

I did not find them feeling very "chushiony" like. Especially for the price. I also found that you need to read the reviews and not just look at the star number review. There were reviews complaining about the shoe that still gave it 4 and 5 stars. I dont understand. Personally I find you feel much more cushion, softness and that memory foam feeling with Sketchers. These Hokas were ridiculously priced. I hope they are worth it.

The color description read "Stardust/Silver." No where did it mention "white soles," and they certainly didn't look white in the photos. The fit is great, but unfortunately I am seriously not a fan of the white soles.

The shoes are easy to put on. I did add elastic straps only because I had back surgery and PT wanted me to add them to all my shoes. As you can see in photo, I wear them a lot to walk my dog. The wear has held up to all the walking on pavement, gravel, and uneven ground.

They are sturdier than other shoes I've worn to work as a cleaner on my feet consistently. I wouldn't say they're the best because I still have a couple other brands to give a try. The price is pretty steep for shoes, so hopefully they do hold up longer than I'm expecting. Comfort is decent and they fit true to size. The soles are pretty thick and they do support my arch better than skechers. The toe bed is wide enough that I don't feel cramped.

I think this is just an extreme case. If you don't walk 300 mi a month. I'm sure they'll last you longer. But for me. It was great only for a short while.
